Women in their forte

My directed study course was built around a research project that explored the position of women in the music industry, as it is male dominated, and how the lack of female representation might affect women’s perception of female success in music.

For this podcast, I had the pleasure of interviewing a handful of strong women in the music industry. All of the accounts from these inspiring women will help to gauge the improvement of the music industry in making a more supportive space for women and give valuable feedback on how the music industry can further uplift women to their full potential.

Lori Rischer runs a program with a female team under Sony Music, and Jennie Smythe is the CEO of a fully female employed music marketing agency in the South. In this episode, Their perspectives give us an insightful view of their personal experiences, the industry’s past, and where the industry is headed in terms of diversity and female leadership.

With the resounding emphasis of the topic of mentorship and uplifting women with safe environments, I was eager to see if our newer women to the music industry had experienced mentorship, what their encounters had been with male or female employers thus far, and what effect these factors had on them. Deeba Abrishamchi and Kaitlin Gladd gave us a fresh perspective on the current climate of the industry and what role gender has played in their careers.

I reached out to Eli&Fur, an incredibly talented Electronic songwriter, DJ, and producer duo. They shared some experiences they had as female musicians and emphasized the importance of support and mentorship for women who are pursuing music.
